Abstract

Organizational health of tertiary institutions in Nigeria and indeed South-South geopolitical zone are the quality of learning and research output. Most of the Universities, Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education face infrastructural deficit which makes it very difficult for effective teaching and learning to take place (Siddiquah & Salim, 2017). It is therefore, not surprising that most of the graduates of these institutions are embarrassingly unemployable as they appear to grossly unequipped with basic 21st century workplace skills. In terms of research output, only very few indigenous tertiary institutions have been able to make up to the top echelon in recent rankings within Africa (Kpolovie & Dorgu, 2019). While it may not be correct to say that scholars in Nigerian institutions are not publishing scientific papers, it is clear that only a few of their publications are accessible in the internet space. To make it worse, the quality and scientific utility of research publications and research reports have come under serious criticism in recent times. This was not the case in the 1960s and 1980s, when Nigerian universities were highly rated for contributing immensely to scientific knowledge (Akintunde, et al., 2019). The decline in the quality and quality of publications across tertiary institutions in Nigeria suggest that some of the institutions are not very healthy as far as learning and research output are concerned
