Abstract

Mathematics is a scientific tool that is developed by man and is applied in solving problems in almost all sphere of life. It is; ''the science of structure, order and relation that has evolved from elementary practices of counting, measuring and describing shapes of objects'‘. (Encyclopaedia Britannica,2013). The quality of science and technology in any developing nation revolves round the quality of Mathematics education received by the students. Odili (2006) states that Mathematics plays a significant role in national development of any country.

The importance of Mathematics in school curriculum from primary to secondary school level reflects the vital role played by the subject in the national development. Contributing on the importance of Mathematics, Salua (2002) observed that no nation could make any meaningful progress in this information and technological age particularly in economic development without technology whose foundation are science and Mathematics. Mathematics is an essential tool in the hands of scientists and technologists in carrying out their daily activities. This is why Onwudiegwu (1988) opined that at every stage Mathematics has to be consulted
