INFLUENCE OF INDUSTRIAL DEMOCRACY ON WORKPLACE HARMONY IN BANKS NIGERIA

Abstract

The recent nation-wide strike under the auspices of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and other affiliates such as ASSBIFI and NUBIFIE is an indicator of workplace disharmony in our economy (Nigeria). It also as well speaks of the height of undemocratic actions meted out to the Nigerian workforce. What we see is a system where casualization of workers is the order of the day and with a workforce too feeble to participate in the decision-making process nor are, they allowed to pursue their welfare through unionization (Egbo, 2015). As the world moves towards global industrial democratization, the Banking Sector is supposed to imbibe and reflect reasonable humanization and empowerment of workers considering their importance for success of the sector. Industrial democracy refers to the practice of respecting employee’s rights and allowing them to form and belong to trade unions, participate in decision making, and air respectable views in the organization.
