Abstract

21st century mathematical instruction is here with us but are we there yet? It is clear that mathematics teachers today face bigger challenges than ever before. Besides keeping students engaged, they ought to understand changing technology, limit distraction in the classroom, inspire learners to be more self-directed and get students do their work outside of the classroom in addition to improved learning outcomes. The present generation of students implies that old ways of teaching, passing knowledge etc are no longer the way students are learning. This paper presents and discusses importance of mathematics teachers to a nation building; present an overview of mathematical instruction in Nigeria. The concept of 21st century instruction, teaching resource and what a school should do  in the digital age to achieve goal of instruction have been discussed. Challenges and way forward to ensure equality learning have also been highlighted.
