Abstract

The paper examines the concept of co-operative enterprise as a self- help, self-reliance and independence organization. It stresses on the meaning and types of co-operation using Nigeria as a case study. From the different definitions, it was observed that co-operatives serve both its members and the development of the community particularly the area of operations. Co-operatives have contributed positively to development of many countries Nigeria not exempted. It dealt extensively on the benefits of co-operatives mainly to the community development, and highlighting the potentials inherent in the spirit of co-operation. It recommended that co-operatives   could only remain relevant if they offer sufficient and quality services to members, particularly women membership and the community as a whole
