THE ORGANISATION AND STRUCTURE OF NIGERIA-EQUATORIAL GUINEA PRE-COLONIAL ECONOMIC RELATIONS.

Abstract

This article focuses on the pre-colonial economic relations between Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea. It tries to examine the structure of the relations, and discovered that the economic relations was based on reciprocal structure. It introduced barter, credit and trust system as mechanism of exchange, with commodities of exchange to include; palm oil, salt, dried fish and ivory. Ivory in turn was traded for European goods like cloth, gun/powder and beads. Ekpe society, Mbiam (oath), Chiefs/Elders, religious and cultural ceremonies, indigenous economic agreements and customs, marriage alliances between trading families, indigenous trade pacts and customary trade oaths were instruments that regulated and sustained cordial economic relations between the two countries during this period.
