Abstract

This work examined the relationship between employee empowerment and cooperation in deposit money banks in Rivers State. The survey research design was adopted. The sample of the study consisted of 66 managers operating in 22 deposit money banks in Rivers State, since it was a census study. Structured questionnaire was used to obtain primary data after due validation, and ascertaining the reliability of the instrument at 0.73 using Crombach alpha. The researchers were able to retrieve 58 copies of the distributed questionnaire.  Spearman Ranking (r) was used for the test of hypotheses via SPSS Version 20.0. The findings revealed that employee empowerment such as engagement and participation have significant positive influence on cooperation. The study concluded that the concern among deposit money banks about the humanistic and commercially financial related activities of their system is a spring-ball for the adoption of employee empowerment through engagement and participation. The study recommended amongst other things that management of deposit money banks should prioritize employee engagement and participation in voice and decision making processes as regards issues connecting to their jobs; Management of deposit money banks should reflect on the externalenvironmental forces of their operations to enable them draw a befitting employee empowerment strategy in line with size and growth rate of the organization so as to avoid empowerment ambiguity which may result to non-implementation and workplace disharmony.
