THE PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS OF PHYSICS TEACHER EDUCATION PROGAMME FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA

Abstract

Teacher education is an important enterprise because no education can rise above the quality of its teacher’s suggesting the need for proper and adequate reform. This paper examines the problems and challenges of physics teacher education program in Nigeria such as curriculum content, teaching methods, teacher quality, instructional resources and the knowledge of physics teacher on Information and Communication Technology, (ICT). The paper highlighted some of the prospects of physics teacher education reform for Nigerian economic and technology development. It also discusses the way forward to the current challenges for physics teacher education in Nigeria. Based on this, recommendations were made on the key reform issues; government and the stakeholder should provide instructional material, training and retraining of physics teachers on information and communication technology, (ICT), government should ensure proper monitoring and implementation of the education reform, all level of education should be provide with adequate qualified physics teacher that would transform  physics teacher education program that can ensure sustainable economic technological development in Nigeria.
