Abstract

With growing concerns about climate change and energy sustainability worldwide, electric vehicles (EVs) have emerged as viable solutions for reducing transportation-related pollutants and enhancing sustainable mobility, Nigeria is not left out. This paper explores the role of electric vehicles in enhancing sustainable transportation in Nigeria. Using a theoretical approach, the diffusion of innovation theory was used to frame, interpret, and guide the study. The DOI theory supports the study reviews from various sources such as policy papers and articles from scholarly and media sources on EV adoption in and out of the country. The study shows that there is a growing interest in electric vehicles (EVs) as a sustainable alternative mode of transportation in Nigeria, but several challenges need to be addressed such as, the current poor infrastructure, very high initial costs and inadequate government support etc. However, positive prospects could be seen in terms of renewable energy integration, local manufacturing, and focused policy efforts. The study recommends the need for multi-stakeholder collaboration to overcome all current barriers; financial incentives and increased charging infrastructure as well as supportive regulatory measures should be implemented by the Nigerian government. Affordable EVs should be manufactured; renewable-powered charging stations should be established; and manufacturing processes should be innovative. Finally, the academia should strengthen EV technology research.
