WORKPLACE DISCIPLINE AND INDUSTRIAL HARMONY OF CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES IN YENAGOA, BAYELSA STATE

The study determined the relationship between workplace discipline and industrial harmony of construction companies in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. The objectives of the study were to determine the relationship between the dimensions of workplace discipline such as preventive discipline, curative discipline and progressive discipline; and industrial harmony such as cooperation, absence of strike and effective communication. The study adopted the cross-sectional survey research design. The population of the study consists of 69 managers from 11 construction companies in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. The entire population was used as the sample size, hence a census study. Structured questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. After validation by the supervisors and other experts in Management. 69 copies of the questionnaires whose reliability was tested through Cronbach Alpha were administered to the targeted sample. However the researchers were able to retrieve 58 copies. Mean and standard deviation were used for the univariate analysis; Spearman Rank Order Correlation Coefficient was used for the bivariate analysis, while the multivariate analysis was done using Partial Correlation. The findings revealed that a significant relationship between workplace discipline and industrial harmony of construction companies in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. It was also found that leadership style moderates the relationship between workplace discipline and industrial harmony of construction companies in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. The study concluded that construction companies in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State adopt discipline mechanisms to manage inappropriate or deviant behaviours in their workplaces. The study recommended amongst others that efforts should be made by managers of construction companies in Yenagoa to help employees understand, the need for discipline in the organizations and why it preventing deviances must be ensured to promote cooperation; Offending employees should be demoted to lower grade for repeated minor offences and it should be in line with the labour act so as to avoid strike actions; Managers, as a matter of necessity, need to learn to share understanding with their employees, inform them about the penalties for minor and major offences and give them opportunity to learn so as to avoid strike actions in the workplace.
