ENGLISH LANGUAGE STUDIES AND PROSPECTS IN COVID AND POST-COVID NIGERIA

Abstract

As English Language learning must continue in Nigeria and indeed, around the globe, even  as the dreaded Covid-19 virus mutates into more virulent strains, leaving footprints of deaths, debilitations and dysfunctional systems. Covid-19 virus, along its path brought unprecedented anxiety over existence there is therefore need to consolidate on its compliant modes and invest on relevant tools that can aid learning, at present and future, since it is obvious that reduced person-to-person contact is the way to go, given that most schools in the country do not have the needed infrastructure to conduct online/virtual teaching and learning. This situation demands answers to important policy questions as to what the impact will be on Studies and what measures might be needed to recover from it . Investment in Remote Learning Systems for  online studies have become the preferred way at present, in comparison to traditional modes, not  only because  the enrollment process, as well as the completion of courses are simpler but  because students are given instruction and information from the comfort of their homes and through browser windows available in computers and other smart devices.. This write-up  presents some of the consequences Covid-19 crisis has generated, as well as a few of the challenges and opportunities that are available in Nigeria with respect to English Language Studies.
